NES (Nintendo)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To me, nothing about the 8-bit era gets me more nostalgic than looking at this box art.\u00a0 Whether it was silver or black (or blue, with <em>Ice Hockey<\/em>), it was plain and simple, and still managed to tell you everything you needed to know.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Password Pak&#8221;.\u00a0 There.\u00a0 Get a pen, pad, and piece of paper, because you&#8217;re gonna need it.<\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>I got to rent <em>Kid Icarus<\/em> a few times early on in my love affair with my NES, but it wasn&#8217;t until\u00a0our neighbours had a yard sale that I managed to own it and give it a serious shot.\u00a0 The kids mostly stayed inside and watched the tube that day, but I perked right up when someone peeked into the house\u00a0and asked &#8220;How much did you want for <em>Kid Ick-ray-cuss<\/em>?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This was my good friend&#8217;s yard sale, and here he was, selling his Nintendo games without telling me?\u00a0 Pfft.\u00a0 Some friend.\u00a0 (\/sarcasm)<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0rushed out to see\u00a0what few games\u00a0were left,\u00a0since it looked like\u00a0most of them had been sold.\u00a0 I knew he didn&#8217;t\u00a0own many\u00a0that I was interested in anyway, <em>Strider <\/em>being one of them, and the only one I kinda wanted was <em>Kid Icarus<\/em>.\u00a0 I have this fuzzy memory of convincing the person who wanted to buy it that I wanted it more, and somehow, they relented.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t have cash on me, since carrying cash wasn&#8217;t\u00a0commonplace at 8 or 9 years old.\u00a0 I took the game into my friend&#8217;s house, and eventually brought it home, but here&#8217;s the funny part &#8211; I don&#8217;t recall rushing to my house to wrangle money from my mom.\u00a0 Did I take it without telling her, or did I just not pay for the game?<\/p>\n<p>Hmm.\u00a0 I still have it, so&#8230;\u00a0 I dunno.\u00a0 Maybe I&#8217;m the one who&#8217;s a crummy friend.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DF2f5pdNwoA\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I think what drew me to <em>Kid Icarus<\/em> so often was the atmosphere and music.\u00a0 At about 1:52 in the video above, an enemy I always\u00a0called\u00a0Death (actually called &#8220;Reaper&#8221; &#8211; makes sense) started flipping out when you got close.\u00a0 It scared the crap out of me when I was younger, and that weird music that started playing just made it worse.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d always get to one of the dungeon levels, get lost, and barely make it through the level alive.\u00a0 I liked a challenge, though, and there was never a time with this game\u00a0that I threw the controller in rage\u00a0or frustration.\u00a0 That&#8217;s more than I can say for even the greatest <em>Mario <\/em>or <em>Mega Man <\/em>games.\u00a0 I was able to use the magazine below to cheat my way through to the final level and beat the game, even though it still wasn&#8217;t a walk in the park to do that.<\/p>\n<p>It didn&#8217;t get nearly as much love through the years as its &#8220;sister game&#8221;\u00a0<em>Metroid<\/em>, but of those two, I actually enjoyed <em>Kid Icarus <\/em>much more.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_860\" style=\"width: 401px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/TopCover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-860\" class=\"size-full wp-image-860\" title=\"TopCover\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/TopCover.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"391\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/TopCover.jpg 391w, https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/TopCover-244x300.jpg 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 391px) 100vw, 391px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Like the internet, only before the internet.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"position: absolute;
