{"id":517,"date":"2012-01-20T16:10:32","date_gmt":"2012-01-20T16:10:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=517"},"modified":"2012-01-20T16:10:32","modified_gmt":"2012-01-20T16:10:32","slug":"eastmost-penninsula-is-the-secret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=517","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Eastmost Penninsula is the secret.&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve had the idea kicking around my brain for a couple days to start making my own Top Five videos.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure what it is, but there&#8217;s something oddly satisfying about taking my favourite things, grouping them together and ranking them however I want.\u00a0 Sites like IGN and GameTrailers have their own countdowns, and I&#8217;m immediately drawn to them whenever they&#8217;re posted.\u00a0 Even if I disagree with the order of some, it&#8217;s just one of those things that\u00a0someone is fully entitled to, and you can&#8217;t help but be intrigued by this person&#8217;s (or website&#8217;s) point of view.\u00a0 It might even open my eyes to a whole new game I would have never known about otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>In thinking about my possible Top Fives lists, the <em>Legend of Zelda<\/em> series pops into my head (along with many other franchises, of course).\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t only because I&#8217;m currently up to my neck in <em>Skyward Sword <\/em>awesomeness, but because the series has had a way of re-inventing itself every single time there&#8217;s a new entry.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_530\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/its-dangerous-to-go-alone-take-this.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-530\" class=\"size-full wp-image-530\" title=\"its-dangerous-to-go-alone-take-this\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/its-dangerous-to-go-alone-take-this.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/its-dangerous-to-go-alone-take-this.png 700w, https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/its-dangerous-to-go-alone-take-this-300x187.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Someone needs to make this into a full game. Srsly.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>How the heck\u00a0am I really\u00a0going to\u00a0narrow <em>Zelda<\/em> anything down to 5&#8217;s or 10&#8217;s??\u00a0 Even when\u00a0taking a broad look at them (like a &#8220;Top Five Zelda Games&#8221; list would do), there are so many things to take into consideration.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exhibit A &#8211; The Top-Down Games<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By now, we know that every game in the series has a hook.\u00a0 While the original introduced a new way of playing adventure games (large map with many secrets, unique weapons, dungeons that can be fought in any order, etc.), <em>A Link to the Past<\/em> introduced an alternate dimension for Link to travel to, and opened up a bevy of puzzle possibilities by travelling from the Light World to the Dark World.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_535\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/600px-Lightworldalttp.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-535\" class=\"size-full wp-image-535\" title=\"600px-Lightworldalttp\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/600px-Lightworldalttp.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/600px-Lightworldalttp.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/600px-Lightworldalttp-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/600px-Lightworldalttp-1024x512.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Everything nice about the Light World wasn&#39;t quite so nice in the Dark World.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Link&#8217;s Awakening <\/em>took\u00a0us far, far away from Hyrule to a place called Koholint Island.\u00a0 Furthermore, Koholint Island wasn&#8217;t even a real place, but a figment of Link&#8217;s imagination &#8211; in the end, his adventure turns out to be a dream.\u00a0 Clich\u00e9, perhaps, but the Game Boy&#8217;s limited number of buttons made for a gameplay alteration that once again pushed developers to come up with ingenious puzzles.\u00a0 Why slap a function on\u00a0the A and B buttons\u00a0and call it a day?\u00a0 Why not swap\u00a0items and combine them\u00a0to surpass some kind of obstacle?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_539\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/linksawakeningmenu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-539\" class=\"size-full wp-image-539\" title=\"linksawakeningmenu\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/linksawakeningmenu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/linksawakeningmenu.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/linksawakeningmenu-300x265.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It wasn&#39;t the biggest inventory, but it got the job done.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Combine arrows and bombs for exploding arrows?\u00a0 Check.\u00a0 Combine the feather and Pegasus Boots for a running jump over a pit of lava?\u00a0 Check.\u00a0 The sword was always a valuable weapon, but the hookshot could do the trick in a pinch, if it needed to.\u00a0 In fact,\u00a0that\u00a0was sometimes needed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Four Swords Adventures <\/em>was actually great because of what it dared <em>not<\/em> to do.\u00a0 Why have a land you can explore freely, when it&#8217;s laid out in front of you in a linear fashion?\u00a0 Why have a vast inventory of items, when your Links can pick them up and put them down in favour of others along\u00a0their journey?\u00a0 The puzzles and fun were intact, but the sometimes-too-much-to-handle vastness of Hyrule was gone.\u00a0 I found it to be a refreshing change of pace.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t had a chance to play much of the two Game Boy Color entries that link (ha!)\u00a0to each other via password system.\u00a0 <em>Oracle of Ages<\/em> focused on puzzles, while\u00a0<em>Oracle of Seasons<\/em>\u00a0was action-oriented &#8211; or perhaps it was the other way around, I&#8217;m not sure yet.\u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;ve only played through the first half\u00a0or so of\u00a0<em>The Minish Cap<\/em>, but\u00a0I know that there are plenty of fantastic moments &#8211; not to mention fantastic throwbacks, as well &#8211;\u00a0to be had in all three of those games.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exhibit B &#8211; The 3D Adventures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What can I say about <em>Ocarina of Time<\/em> that hasn&#8217;t already been beaten to death?\u00a0 Well, from the simplicity\u00a0of the\u00a0Z-targeting system, to\u00a0complex dungeons capped\u00a0by curiously satisfying boss battles (even if you were losing spectacularly, you could still come out on top), it pretty much had everything that other games of the time didn&#8217;t have.\u00a0 It was massive, but\u00a0felt small and familiar at the same time, like I&#8217;d traveled to all these areas before.<\/p>\n<p>Though I&#8217;ve played through it\u00a0several times,\u00a0it&#8217;s gotten a bit stale.\u00a0\u00a0Somehow, I still feel like buying a 3DS for the sole purpose of going through this game one more time.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the true power of the\u00a0<em>Ocarina<\/em>, I guess.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Wind Waker <\/em>ranks right up there among my favourites, quite possibly because of the simple fact that it looks amazing.\u00a0 I was in shock with everyone else when I saw that first trailer in 2001,\u00a0more than\u00a0ten years ago.\u00a0 Sure, it looked artsy, but could it really develop into a genuine <em>Zelda <\/em>game?<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/krQ40gvxCV4\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It actually helped each character become even more expressive, if you can believe it.\u00a0 On top of that, the area you could explore was simply massive!\u00a0 Even though sea travel seemed a bit tedious at first, delving deeper into the seemingly tiny\u00a0islands that made up the Great Sea was quite fascinating.\u00a0 The morbid curiosity from the original NES title was back, and you really felt like exploring, just to know what happened if you entered an island a certain way, blew up a boulder, or simply climbed to the peak of a mountain.<\/p>\n<p>Into the motion-control generation <em>Zelda <\/em>games went, and <em>Twilight Princess<\/em> didn&#8217;t disappoint.\u00a0 The game was bloody <strong>huge<\/strong>, and more or less offered a lot of the same things &#8211; just better-looking &#8211; that were in <em>Ocarina of Time <\/em>and <em>The Wind Waker<\/em>.\u00a0 You could turn into a wolf, and sniff out different scents to gain access to new areas.\u00a0 I suppose that was a different way of approaching things.<\/p>\n<p><em>Skyward Sword <\/em>is\u00a0somewhat of\u00a0a spiritual successor to <em>TP<\/em>, mostly due to the similar visual style.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also\u00a0one of the more complex, and well thought-out games in the series.\u00a0 Critics and fans alike have gone so far as saying it is the best in the entire series &#8211; something I can&#8217;t quite agree with, but it&#8217;s right up there, all the same.\u00a0 Undeniably, it&#8217;s incredibly fun to figure out every brain teaser you come across, and the superb 1:1 controls are worked into the game in a way that compliments it nicely, instead of having it feel gimmicky.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exhibit C &#8211; The &#8220;Black Sheep&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To some, these games\u00a0are considered\u00a0among the greatest\u00a0the series has to offer.\u00a0 To me, they&#8217;re the games that weren&#8217;t necessarily bad, just&#8230;\u00a0 different.\u00a0 Not that that&#8217;s a bad thing!<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned in my <a title=\"Zelda II: The Adventure of Link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=120\" target=\"_blank\">post about <em>Zelda II: The Adventure of Link<\/em><\/a>, it took me a while to realize I was actually playing the follow-up to a game I already knew and loved.\u00a0 Gone was the overworld and your ability to attack foes.\u00a0 Instead, it was replaced by a traditional turn-based RPG mechanic of &#8220;encounter enemy on the board, prepare for battle&#8221;.\u00a0 To fight those\u00a0enemies,\u00a0the game played like\u00a0many platformers did at the time, and became the only <em>Zelda <\/em>title thus far to have a side-scrolling element.<\/p>\n<p>But&#8230;\u00a0 I still loved it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_544\" style=\"width: 1041px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/zeldaii.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-544\" class=\"size-full wp-image-544\" title=\"zeldaii\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/zeldaii.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1031\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/zeldaii.jpg 1031w, https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/zeldaii-300x64.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/zeldaii-1024x218.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1031px) 100vw, 1031px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-544\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The southern part of Death Mountain in Zelda II looks familiar, does it not?<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Majora&#8217;s Mask<\/em> is grouped with the games\u00a0down here\u00a0because&#8230;\u00a0 well, because it&#8217;s so weird.\u00a0 Even though <em>Link&#8217;s Awakening <\/em>took place outside of Hyrule&#8217;s border, <em>MM <\/em>looks and feels like it should be similar to <em>OoT<\/em>.\u00a0 Anyone who has ever played it, however, knows just how wrong a statement that is.\u00a0 The three day cycle takes a bit of getting used to, but once you&#8217;re acclamated, you find a world full of characters and enemies unlike anything you&#8217;ve ever seen before.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve only played through about half the game, so far.<\/p>\n<p>But&#8230;\u00a0 I still loved it.<\/p>\n<p>The next two &#8211; er, the final two &#8211; I have lumped together into one&#8230;\u00a0 perhaps that&#8217;s a bit unfair, considering I haven&#8217;t even played one of them.\u00a0 <em>Phantom Hourglass<\/em> is definitely fun; I had a great time playing through what I&#8217;ve played through so far&#8230;\u00a0 but it&#8217;s just&#8230;\u00a0 on a handheld console.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t seem to commit myself to games on a &#8220;console&#8221; that seems to have been built for vacationing.<\/p>\n<p>I know that&#8217;s not true, but I sometimes have a rough time getting around that stigma.\u00a0 I usually just cave and go back to playing something on a bigger screen.\u00a0 It&#8217;s unfortunate, because I&#8217;ve undoubtedly missed out on many great games because of this.<\/p>\n<p>Still&#8230;\u00a0 I enjoyed it, and I want to pick up <em>Spirit Tracks <\/em>whenever I find it at a decent price.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What the heck was this random tangent all about?\u00a0 Well, the 35+ hours I spent playing (and beating) <em>Skyward Sword<\/em> had me on a constant trip down memory lane.\u00a0 It was recently announced that the new Wii title is chonologically first in the convoluted <em>Zelda<\/em> storyline, and it really does set\u00a0the story of Zelda and Link\u00a0in motion.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t spoil anything, but everything I grew up enjoying as a kid now has a definitive origin&#8230;\u00a0 and\u00a0as\u00a0a longtime fan of the series,\u00a0I&#8217;m quite satisfied with that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve had the idea kicking around my brain for a couple days to start making my own Top Five videos.
