id Software (PC, Mac, Super NES, 32x, PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, iOS, Jaguar, Saturn, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation 3)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every time I\u00a0play games on\u00a0a new platform,\u00a0I seem to\u00a0fall in love with whatever\u00a0I happen to play first.\u00a0 Besides the obvious\u00a0pack-in title (like <em>Mario-everything<\/em>), there was always\u00a0that one\u00a0random game\u00a0that I&#8217;d play and enjoy the\u00a0crap out of, simply because\u00a0I hadn&#8217;t\u00a0experienced anything like it before.\u00a0 Even if\u00a0it was terrible, I can still go back and play\u00a0it for a quick nostalgic trip down memory lane.<\/p>\n<p>For me, the NES had <em>Excitebike <\/em>and<em> Renegade<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0On Game Boy, it was <em>Golf <\/em>and<em>\u00a0Mega Man in Dr. Wily&#8217;s Revenge<\/em>.\u00a0 When the Super NES came around, I\u00a0was introduced\u00a0to\u00a0<em>Joe &amp; Mac\u00a0<\/em>and<em>\u00a0True Golf Classics: Waialae Country Club<\/em>&#8230;\u00a0 and the list goes on!<\/p>\n<p>Even the first few times I played a Virtual Boy demo, I wanted one pretty badly.\u00a0 <em>Red Alarm<\/em> may be headache-inducing now, but I&#8217;d still do anything to re-live those initial moments of pure bliss!<\/p>\n<p>Y&#8217;know, before my eyes started to burn and the headache set in.\u00a0 But before then&#8230; BLISS!<\/p>\n<p>So, when\u00a0the Atari Jaguars and Panasonic 3DO&#8217;s of the world\u00a0began pimping their 3D games and realistic graphics, I started feeling\u00a0quite jealous.\u00a0 I knew these consoles were way out of our price range, and that it would be a while before I&#8217;d get my hands on some of the popular games everyone seemed to be raving about.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0a3xiKejxWU\" height=\"480\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Then, on Christmas morning in &#8217;94, my views on gaming took a bit of a jolt.\u00a0 We got our first family computer, a Compaq Presario CDS 520.\u00a0 Right out of the box,\u00a0it seemed like\u00a0the possibilities would be\u00a0limitless.\u00a0 Microsoft&#8217;s <em>Encarta &#8217;94<\/em> was an entire encyclopedia with colour pictures and videos!\u00a0 ON A DISC!\u00a0 Whoa!!\u00a0 We also\u00a0had a phone line hooked into the back of the PC, and we could make calls\u00a0from it if we wanted to!\u00a0 Crazy!<\/p>\n<p>Of course,\u00a0it also\u00a0opened the door for me to play a few games I had been wanting to try.\u00a0 My dad bought the Electronic Arts Top Ten Pak, which included\u00a0a variety\u00a0games for both he and I to enjoy (<em>Indianapolis 500<\/em> was the best, by far).\u00a0 I made my own game choice at our local K-Mart store &#8211; a cheap\u00a0shareware disc containing partial games, one of them being <em>Doom<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, it was mine to enjoy!\u00a0 Of course, it was shareware, so only one of the game&#8217;s episodes was available to play.\u00a0 <em>Knee Deep in the Dead<\/em> had plenty to offer though, so at the time, I pretty much considered it the full game.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first game I played on my PC that didn&#8217;t come with it, and it blew my mind.\u00a0 Where <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> shocked you with violence alone, <em>Doom<\/em> offered up the one-two punch of blood and gore mixed with satanic imagery.\u00a0\u00a0On top\u00a0of that, it had music and sound effects\u00a0that set the mood better than any game I had played up to that point.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2064\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?attachment_id=2064\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2064\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2064\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2064\" alt=\"Nothing creeped me out more than playing with the lights off, walking around a dimly lit area, and you hear the pig-like snort of a Pink Demon nearby.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/doom1.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/doom1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/doom1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nothing creeped me out more than playing with the lights off, walking around a dimly lit area, and you hear the pig-like snort of a Pink Demon nearby.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was the simple things about <em>Doom<\/em> that I enjoyed.\u00a0 While some kids I knew\u00a0played it and revelled in the amount of gore,\u00a0or the\u00a0havoc they could wreak with a BFG (and snickered at what BFG actually stood for), I was\u00a0thinking of\u00a0strategies to take on the hordes of baddies in certain rooms.\u00a0\u00a0I&#8217;d also walk up against every single wall\u00a0in\u00a0eachlevel, repeadly tapping the spacebar in the\u00a0hopes\u00a0of finding\u00a0doors to secret areas.<\/p>\n<p>There was a much more intriguing game under the surface, but all people could talk about was the violence.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t know how many of the secrets I actually did find, but I played through <em>Knee Deep in the Dead<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Commander Keen 4: Goodbye Galaxy <\/em>enough to\u00a0wear that poor old 486 out&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2073\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?attachment_id=2073\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2073\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2073\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2073\" alt=\"A Compaq Presario CDS 520 (not mine)...
