{"id":905,"date":"2012-09-05T12:03:42","date_gmt":"2012-09-05T12:03:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=905"},"modified":"2012-09-05T12:03:42","modified_gmt":"2012-09-05T12:03:42","slug":"my-top-100-92-driv3r","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=905","title":{"rendered":"My Top 100: #92 &#8211; DRIV3R"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_915\" style=\"width: 367px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/driv3r.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-915\" class=\"size-full wp-image-915\" title=\"driv3r\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/driv3r.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/driv3r.jpg 357w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/driv3r-214x300.jpg 214w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 357px) 100vw, 357px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-915\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">2004 &#8211; Xbox-PS2-PC (Reflections Interactive)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Driver 3 <\/em>(not &#8220;Driv-three-Arrr&#8221;) is the first game on this countdown that I feel might leave some people scratching their heads.<\/p>\n<p>When it was released for PC and PlayStation, the first <em>Driver <\/em>game had you pretty much just driving from point A to point B, running errands for characters you never really connected with (or even saw on screen, for that matter), just avoiding\u00a0cops or other cars that were out to hinder your progress.\u00a0 The sequel added on-foot missions, and though it was pretty ambitious,\u00a0the graphics and controls were a\u00a0far cry from\u00a0<em>Grand Theft Auto III <\/em>(which was released less than a year later).<\/p>\n<p>By the time<em> DRIV3R <\/em>rolled around, <em>GTA3 <\/em>and <em>Vice City <\/em>had been around a while.\u00a0 They were the\u00a0gold\u00a0standard, and\u00a0every free-roaming action game that came after them had pretty high expectations.\u00a0 The <em>Driver <\/em>franchise did pretty well on its first two attempts, so it was understandable that there was\u00a0a lot of\u00a0hype surrounding the third game.<\/p>\n<p>From the get-go,\u00a0critics trashed it.\u00a0 Some claimed\u00a0the on-foot missions were terrible, and the lack of melee weapons was inexcusable.\u00a0 The game\u00a0was blamed for having\u00a0&#8220;rubberband AI&#8221;, which meant that no matter how well you thought you were getting away from someone,\u00a0the code would allow them to\u00a0catch right back up.<\/p>\n<p>GameSpot gave it a 3.8, IGN gave it a 5.4, and <em>EGM <\/em>gave it a 5.9&#8230;\u00a0 so what could I have possibly enjoyed enough about it to include the game on my list?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gJHLdmSDBHs\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To begin with, I found the hand-to-hand\u00a0combat in<em> GTA <\/em>games absolutely terrible, so I certainly didn&#8217;t miss it not being\u00a0in <em>DRIV3R<\/em>.\u00a0 The\u00a0graphics had a surprising amount of polish to them, and the music gave the game a pretty good Hollywood vibe to it.\u00a0 Miami feels like a grittier version of Vice City, Istanbul&#8217;s narrow streets are complimented by a cool middle-eastern soundtrack, and Nice looks&#8230;\u00a0 well, nice.\u00a0 (Couldn&#8217;t resist.)<\/p>\n<p>If you like to nitpick about everything that&#8217;s wrong about games, then don&#8217;t play this.\u00a0 The driving physics were meant to be realistic, if only to counter the slightly arcade feel that Rockstar went with for <em>GTA<\/em>.\u00a0 Some people liked it, a lot of people hated it, but I really enjoyed it.<\/p>\n<p>Thumbs up, brah.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_916\" style=\"width: 731px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/driver3swim.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-916\" class=\"size-full wp-image-916\" title=\"driver3swim\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/driver3swim.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"721\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/driver3swim.jpg 721w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/driver3swim-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 721px) 100vw, 721px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">To top it all off, Tanner can swim!
