2012 – Xbox 360 (Mojang)<\/p><\/div>\n

To call Minecraft<\/em> a game in the traditional sense\u00a0wouldn’t be doing it justice.<\/p>\n

To begin with, just take a look at it; everything looks like it’s made of giant, textured pixels.\u00a0 It’s played from a first-person perspective,\u00a0yet it isn’t a first-person shooter.\u00a0 The music is more likely to make you fall asleep than to get you pumped for action,\u00a0and there aren’t all that many enemies, at least until nightfall… \u00a0so what exactly do you do\u00a0in Minecraft<\/em>?<\/p>\n

It’s pretty much all in the title – you mine, you craft, explore and survive.\u00a0 It’s not the “why” you do it that’s fun – it’s the “how”, and that part is entirely up to you.<\/p>\n

When I downloaded the trial version\u00a0for Xbox 360\u00a0and gave it a try,\u00a0my character\u00a0was plopped into the middle of\u00a0a forest with nothing but his bare hands.\u00a0 I walked around\u00a0to check and see what blocks I could mine, which ones I couldn’t, how to place them, etc.\u00a0 I quickly\u00a0decided that in order for me to enjoy this game, I had to be a creative person.<\/p>\n

Now, I’ve always been self-conscious and overly critical\u00a0about my ability to come up with original things, be it writing a song on guitar or a poem on paper.\u00a0 It’s just one of those things, I guess.\u00a0 Anyhow, I\u00a0almost gave up on the game right then and there.<\/p>\n

For some unknown reason,\u00a0I splurged and bought the full version not long afterwards.\u00a0 I was skeptical at first, but with a push in the right direction from my friend Jordan, my first actual world started taking shape.\u00a0 A\u00a0“naturally formed” (randomly generated)\u00a0mound of dirt\u00a0on\u00a0the edge of\u00a0a beach became a narrow stairway.\u00a0 A tiny underground\u00a0room was built after a few steps, complete with a crafting table (to make stuffs!) and a stove (to smelt stuffs!).<\/p>\n

On the upside of the stairway, I was building some semblance of a beach house when the sun started to set on the first day.\u00a0 It was time to get moving and take cover, because in Minecraft<\/em>, the Zombies and Creepers that\u00a0show up\u00a0aren’t simply\u00a0a quick melee attack\u00a0away from extermination.\u00a0 In fact, you’d be lucky to get\u00a0in enough\u00a0whacks with a stone shovel to do in a Zombie, and Creepers…\u00a0 well, you don’t attack Creepers.\u00a0 You just run.<\/p>\n

This poor fella was just tending to his garden when a Creeper dropped in from a cliff above!<\/p>\n
