They made sequels to movies.\u00a0 This much I knew.\u00a0 A sequel to a video game?\u00a0 Quoi<\/em>?\u00a0 I had no pre-conceived notion that a game was supposed to be different than its predecessor, much less even have<\/em> a sequel.<\/p>\n

1988 - Nintendo Entertainment System (Nintendo)<\/p><\/div>\n

It came out on September 1st, 1988, the day before my 5th birthday.\u00a0 As employees at the store around the corner, my sisters had the scoop on when movies were coming to VHS, what new flavor of\u00a0chips would be coming in, and\u00a0of course, when new games came in.<\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/div>\n
Maybe it was a\u00a0walk over\u00a0to get ice cream…\u00a0 or maybe\u00a0we went for\u00a0a snack run.\u00a0 Anyhow, as my sister spoke to her co-worker, I was\u00a0looking at all the games they had to rent.\u00a0 After a few minutes, she calls me over, and breaks the big news – there’s a Super Mario Bros. 2.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0The store has it, and we’re renting it for a few days.\u00a0 SHE was the one who was excited, giddy at the prospect of playing a new Mario game.\u00a0 I was just\u00a0shocked that such a thing would even exist!<\/div>\n

We bring it home, pop it in, and immediately recognize the differences…\u00a0 but…\u00a0 I like it.\u00a0 I like it a lot.\u00a0 There were no Goombas, Koopas\u00a0or Bowsers to be seen, just ShyGuys, Snifits and Birdos in their place.\u00a0 It was vibrant and colorful, all the characters had distinct advantages over the others, and the music instantly sucked you into another world.\u00a0 It was<\/em> another world, and it was amazing.\u00a0 Not that the first one didn’t have that, it’s just that this was almost the polar opposite, yet it all still felt like a Mario game.<\/div>\n

Many, many\u00a0hours had been blissfully lost playing\u00a0this game\u00a0by the time I heard the news;\u00a0Super Mario Bros. 2<\/em> was in fact a re-make of a Japanese title by the name of Doki-Doki Panic<\/em>!\u00a0 Wha?\u00a0 But it feels so Mario-ey!<\/em>\u00a0 No matter how much I could deny it, it was right there in my Mario Mania<\/em> magazine.<\/div>\n
