Chicken dinner!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I can think of a few game-related birthday memories, but the one that sticks out the most is my 13<sup>th<\/sup>, which was in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Hitting my teen years was quite the milestone for me.\u00a0 Being a \u201cteenager\u201d was so much cooler than \u201cjust being a kid\u201d, so I wanted to do something memorable.\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t had a birthday party in a few years, but a bunch of friends and I got together and went to see the Kevin Costner movie <em>Tin Cup<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure why we chose to see that movie, but there were only four theatres at this particular cinema at the time \u2013 the only thing I can guess is that the other three movies being shown weren\u2019t all that much more interesting.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, it was just a typical romantic comedy with some golf action thrown in for good measure.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it wasn\u2019t the awesome golf movie that <em>Happy Gilmore<\/em> was (which is what I was hoping for), but there was a scene in a strip club that had me thinking seeing this movie was a good choice.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019mon.\u00a0 I was 13.\u00a0 Gimme a break.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, after the movie, we headed down to the same Greco restaurant I drive by each night when I come home from work.\u00a0 Although my taste in pizza has become more refined as of late, it was a damn good greasy slice at the time.\u00a0 I remember thinking it was a bit dreary weather-wise, but I ended up having quite the memorable day.<\/p>\n<p>There were two games I got as a present that day, and both were for PC.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3224\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/sfc08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3224\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3224\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/sfc08.jpg\" alt=\"1992 - U.S. Gold\" width=\"640\" height=\"818\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/sfc08.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/sfc08-234x300.jpg 234w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3224\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1992 &#8211; U.S. Gold<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I had seen this game in the bargain bin at Zellers here in Fredericton, which was quite odd \u2013 not only were <em>Street Fighter II<\/em> games still coming out at that point (which made it feel like the game was still \u201ccurrent\u201d), but the fact that there was a PC port blew my mind!\u00a0 A Super Nintendo or Genesis version of an Arcade game made sense to me, but a PC version of a fighting game did not.<\/p>\n<p>Another thing I was intrigued about was the sticker on the box (not seen above).\u00a0 Apparently, there was a <em>Mega Man<\/em> and <em>Mega Man 3<\/em> game included on the same disc as a bonus.\u00a0 With the memory of the whole <em>Mega Man 3<\/em> debacle fresh in my mind (the one where my NES copy got lost), I asked for the <em>Street Fighter II<\/em> PC game for my birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, I was thrilled about getting it\u2026 and then I played the games.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3226\" style=\"width: 651px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/mega-man-dos-stage-select.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3226\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3226\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/mega-man-dos-stage-select.jpg\" alt=\"Looks pretty derpy, doesn't it?\" width=\"641\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/mega-man-dos-stage-select.jpg 641w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/mega-man-dos-stage-select-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 641px) 100vw, 641px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looks pretty derpy, doesn&#8217;t it?<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was still in the early days of the Internet, and we didn\u2019t have it at our house.\u00a0 If we had, I would have been able to look up the horrible reviews that both the <em>Street Fighter II<\/em> port and the completely new and original <em>Mega Man<\/em> games had been getting.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>SFII<\/em> game was the exact same game I knew and loved, but had some pretty serious frame rate issues.\u00a0 My PC was a 486, which was a pretty solid machine that ran <em>Doom<\/em> and <em>Commander Keen<\/em> games without any problems.\u00a0 For it to struggle with a game that ran smoothly on a 16-bit console was perplexing.<\/p>\n<p>I also had a Gravis Gamepad to play the game with, but even then, the game lagged so much that pulling off the special moves that made the game so fun was nearly impossible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3227\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/gravis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3227\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3227\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/gravis.jpg\" alt=\"I especially liked the Super Famicom-like buttons. COLORS!\" width=\"550\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/gravis.jpg 550w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/gravis-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3227\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I especially liked the Super Famicom-like buttons.<br \/>COLORS!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And then there were the <em>Mega Man<\/em> games\u2026 *sigh*<\/p>\n<p>Not only was I disheartened to find out these weren\u2019t PC ports of the NES games I loved so much, but they also didn\u2019t look and play <em>anything<\/em> like them.\u00a0 The trademark music was replaced with the dulcet tones of your own breathing (I.E., there was none) and the three boss stages to be incredibly long and uninteresting.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Mega Man 3<\/em> game doubled the total number of stages to six, but kept the same awkward look and feel.\u00a0 To say I was disappointed with it is an understatement, and I actually felt bad about asking for it for my birthday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wXvQQZwKE1I\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I must have been on a PC kick in those days, because the only other game I got that year was for PC as well \u2013 Papyrus\u2019 <em>NASCAR Racing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>We had gone on our first trip to Pocono Raceway earlier that year, and I was obsessed with all forms of auto racing.\u00a0 Not long before my birthday and the start of the school year, we made a trip to Calais, ME to do some cross-border shopping.\u00a0 In the electronics section at Wal-Mart that day, I saw a PC game with my favourite driver\u2019s car on the cover.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3228\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/nascardos.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3228\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3228\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/nascardos.jpg\" alt=\"1994 - Papyrus\" width=\"640\" height=\"718\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/nascardos.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/nascardos-267x300.jpg 267w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3228\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1994 &#8211; Papyrus<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My fascination with the sport was still relatively new, but the game intrigued me.\u00a0 The only NASCAR-related game I had played at that point was <em>Kyle Petty\u2019s No Fear Racing<\/em>, which was very much an arcade-like racer with nitro boosts and offensive weapons \u00e0-la <em>Super Mario Kart<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This game looked about as realistic as it could get in those days, and although I didn\u2019t flat-out ask for it, I dropped some not-so-subtle hints it would make a great birthday gift!<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t actually expect to get it however, so it was quite the surprise when I un-wrapped it that day at Greco.\u00a0 Not long after installing (and then promptly deleting) <em>Street Fighter II<\/em> and <em>Mega Man<\/em>, I popped in the <em>NASCAR Racing<\/em> CD and installed the game to see what it was like.<\/p>\n<p>Right off the bat, my impressions were mixed.\u00a0 I had a console-like controller hooked up and ready to play these new games I had gotten, but it really didn\u2019t feel right with <em>NASCAR Racing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Was it the game?\u00a0 Was it the controller?\u00a0 Whatever it was, it had me feeling like absolute crap \u2013 I had asked for TWO games, gotten them, and then didn\u2019t particularly like either of them.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t so much that I should have asked for something else (why oh WHY didn\u2019t I ask for <em>Super Mario RPG <\/em> instead??), but the idea that games were big purchases.\u00a0 To have my parents buy a game for me, then have it promptly forgotten about was something I was always mindful to avoid.<\/p>\n<p>As I went to bed in preparation for the first day of Grade 8 (which was the next day), my mom asked me \u201cDid you have a good birthday?\u00a0 Do you like your gifts?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I am an awful liar, so I couldn\u2019t help but hesitate when I answered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes\u2026 um, I think so?\u00a0 Yeaahhh?\u00a0 I mean, to tell the truth, I\u2019m really not sure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t remember her reacting negatively to that answer, but I remember feeling absolutely awful, almost nauseated, as I attempted to fall asleep.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lIx2PAcd6c8\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the coming weeks, I did my best to find something, ANYTHING redeemable about this game.<\/p>\n<p>I discovered that the in-game \u201cpaint shop\u201d was incredibly fun and intuitive for making my own schemes.\u00a0 There were a ton of pre-made decals and brush tools, and I would always try to make the coolest-looking car on the track.\u00a0 If that failed, I\u2019d give up and try to make the tackiest car on the track.<\/p>\n<p>I discovered that turning the damage off and going full-throttle around each corner was way easier \u2013 and way more fun \u2013 than trying to navigate the corner legitimately.\u00a0 To do that without slowing down or without spinning out wasn\u2019t the \u201cproper\u201d way to play the game, but it was challenging nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p>I discovered that turning the damage back on and going the wrong way around the track to cause a pileup was probably the most fun I had in playing a game in quite some time.\u00a0 How many cars could I take out in a single wreck?\u00a0 I\u2019d invite Josh and Jean-Luc over to see how big the crashes could get, and we\u2019d have competitions to see who could wreak the most havoc.<\/p>\n<p>And then, just as my interest was in the game waning, I got the Christmas gift that changed everything.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3229\" style=\"width: 585px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/thrustmaster.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3229\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3229\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/thrustmaster.jpg\" alt=\"Here it is; The Thrustmaster&#8230; *giggles*<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was essentially just a hunk of rubber and plastic latched onto a rotating controller (which you can kinda see in the centre of the wheel in the picture above).\u00a0 Paired with the shifter and foot pedals however, it was the most amazing thing I had ever experienced.<\/p>\n<p>No longer was this just a <em>game<\/em>, it was a simulator, and it was the way NASCAR games were meant to be played.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I\u2019d watch a race on TV and there would be an onboard video from one of the cars, I\u2019d always pay close attention to how drivers were using the throttle through the corners, how they\u2019d turn the wheel abruptly to get the car to rotate in the centre of the corner, and how a car\u2019s rear-end sliding through the turns could be on the edge, but fast\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I would soak up all the small details from the real thing, just so I could gain that extra tenth of a second per lap on the not-so-real thing.<\/p>\n<p>I ended up buying three of the game\u2019s sequels, a few other racing simulators, as well a couple \u201cnew and improved\u201d steering wheels for PC.\u00a0 I\u2019ve participated in countless online races against people from around the world, and I\u2019ve been a part of a league comprised of drivers from around the Maritime provinces.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been lucky enough to win my fair share of those races, and to have an absolute blast in doing it \u2013 even in defeat.<\/p>\n<p>The night of my 13th birthday, I fell asleep thinking I had gotten a dud for a birthday present.<\/p>\n<p>In retrospect, I can\u2019t help but think it was one of the greatest gifts I\u2019ve ever gotten.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1051\" style=\"width: 614px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/nr4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1051\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1051\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/nr4.jpg\" alt=\"Playing NASCAR Racing 4, which was a present for graduating from High School.
