{"id":2998,"date":"2014-01-13T22:47:53","date_gmt":"2014-01-13T22:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=2998"},"modified":"2014-01-16T11:29:06","modified_gmt":"2014-01-16T11:29:06","slug":"rapid-fire-game-reviews","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=2998","title":{"rendered":"Rapid Fire Game Reviews!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am currently playing through five (technically six) games on four separate consoles.\u00a0 I can usually juggle two, or at the very most three at a time, but five or six is beyond anything my brain can handle.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m just a video game lightweight, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I need to whittle the list down to at least three, and I\u2019m hoping this spur-of-the-moment post will help my decision-making process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3000\" style=\"width: 608px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3000\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3000\" alt=\"Grand Theft Auto V - PS3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1.jpg\" width=\"598\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1.jpg 598w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/1-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 598px) 100vw, 598px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grand Theft Auto V &#8211; PS3<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fantastic game.\u00a0 There\u2019s lots of variety in the missions I\u2019ve played so far, it has characters that you actually feel some kind of connection with, and it looks spectacular.\u00a0 Where <em>IV<\/em>\u2019s driving controls made it feel like cars weighed a ton,<em> V<\/em> goes back to that great arcade-like feel from the PlayStation 2-generation of <em>GTA<\/em> games.<\/p>\n<p>I think I made a mistake in getting this for PlayStation 3 instead of Xbox 360, however.\u00a0 My 80GB hard drive is already packed full of software updates to several other games, and I had to delete a few things to make room for <em>GTA V<\/em>\u2019s mandatory 8GB install.\u00a0 Somewhat annoying, but I\u2019m not ruling out getting a newer-generation (and bigger HD-equipped) PS3 someday down the road.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verdict:<\/strong>\u00a0 Keep playing.\u00a0 I can\u2019t quit until that psychopath Trevor gets what\u2019s (inevitably) coming to him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3001\" style=\"width: 330px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3001\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3001\" alt=\"The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - DS\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/2.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/2.jpg 320w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/2-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass &#8211; DS<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is the second time I\u2019ve attempted a playthrough, the first time being about six years ago.\u00a0 My experience with the \u201ctouch screen only\u201d controls wasn\u2019t a great one, and it was a little tough on my (stylus-holding) left hand.\u00a0 I quit playing before completing the second dungeon, not really being in the mood to deal with the hand constantly cramping up.<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, I had just finished <em>Wind Waker HD<\/em> when I decided to see how the rest of this particular <em>Zelda<\/em> storyline unfolded.\u00a0 I had also acquired a 3DS XL during the summer months, so putting the game on a flat surface was a more viable option than it was with the DSi\u2019s smaller screen.\u00a0 I wouldn&#8217;t have to squint quite as much to read text!<\/p>\n<p>The game itself makes great use of the touch screen for puzzles, but repeatedly having to go back and re-visit a temple on Mercay Island (the island you start on) gets quite tedious.\u00a0 Other than that, I\u2019m enjoying my experience much more this time around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verdict:<\/strong>\u00a0 Keep playing.\u00a0 I received <em>A Link Between Worlds<\/em> as a gift for Christmas, and even though I know it\u2019s probably vastly superior to <em>Phantom Hourglass<\/em>, I can\u2019t quit again!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3002\" style=\"width: 575px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3002\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3002\" alt=\"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 - Xbox 360\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/3.jpg\" width=\"565\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/3.jpg 565w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/3-300x173.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 565px) 100vw, 565px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 &#8211; Xbox 360<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Very little in the <em>Call of Duty<\/em> series has surprised me since the first <em>Modern Warfare<\/em>\u00a0game.\u00a0 These titles are a dime a dozen, and when I found this one for less than $10 at GameStop, I couldn\u2019t resist.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, you just need to shoot stuff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verdict:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stop playing.\u00a0 Someday, when I have three hours to kill, I\u2019ll go through the single player campaign.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3003\" style=\"width: 639px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3003\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3003\" alt=\"Super Mario 3D World - Wii U\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/5.jpg\" width=\"629\" height=\"355\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/5.jpg 629w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/5-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Super Mario 3D World &#8211; Wii U<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s pretty hard to hate a game that goes out of its way to give you more of the fantastic <em>Mario<\/em> platforming you know and love.\u00a0 It\u2019s not quite as sweaty palm-inducing as the <em>Galaxy<\/em> games were, but <em>3D World<\/em> is so full of surprises that you just can\u2019t stop playing it.<\/p>\n<p>This is the closest we\u2019ve gotten to a \u201cNew\u201d <em>Super Mario Bros. 2<\/em> game, what with the four different playable characters, the &#8220;slot&#8221; game (minus the casino vibe), as well as certain objects you can pick up and throw.\u00a0 I\u2019m still waiting for another turnip-tossing, vine-climbing, Birdo-ShyGuy-and-Snifit-infested romp through SubCon\u2026\u00a0 but this will have to do for now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verdict:\u00a0<\/strong> Keep playing.\u00a0 I\u2019ve made it to World 5, and once I\u2019ve beaten the game, I can go through it at a later date to get all the bonus stuff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3004\" style=\"width: 722px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3004\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3004\" alt=\"Lego The Lord of the Rings - PS3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/4.jpg\" width=\"712\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/4.jpg 712w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/4-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 712px) 100vw, 712px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3004\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lego The Lord of the Rings &#8211; PS3<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The only thing that matters when it comes to a <em>Lego<\/em> game is whether or not you like the franchise it&#8217;s based on.\u00a0 That&#8217;s pretty much it.\u00a0 I loved <em>Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga<\/em>, but the <em>Indiana Jones<\/em>, <em>Harry Potter<\/em> and <em>Pirates of the Caribbean<\/em> games didn\u2019t really resonate with me all that much, simply because I&#8217;m not that big a fan of the movies.<\/p>\n<p>Truth be told, I haven&#8217;t seen many of them.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n<p>I quite enjoy Peter Jackson&#8217;s <em>The<\/em> <em>Lord of the Rings<\/em> trilogy, so this one is right up my alley.\u00a0 The puzzles are pretty simple, and your character can easily get lost in the massive battles that take place, but I\u2019m enjoying it so far.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a light-hearted take on a story that can get pretty heavy, at times.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verdict:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stop playing.\u00a0 As much as I&#8217;m liking it, I\u2019ll pick this one back up later on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3005\" style=\"width: 615px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3005\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3005\" alt=\"NES Remix - Nintendo eShop (Wii U)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/6.jpg\" width=\"605\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/6.jpg 605w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/6-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 605px) 100vw, 605px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NES Remix &#8211;
