Valve (PC, Xbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Mac)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gordon Freeman can&#8217;t catch a break, can he?<\/p>\n<p>He miraculously repels an alien invasion by himself in the first game, and all he gets\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0lousy\u00a0&#8220;re-assignment&#8221;\u00a0after 20 years in stasis.\u00a0\u00a0He comes back to life in time for the events in the second game, in a world where humans are now friends with the same aliens he just did away with??\u00a0 What??<\/p>\n<p>All he wanted to do was show up for work, theorize the hell out of some physics, then go home.\u00a0\u00a0Bailing\u00a0the world out twice was not\u00a0a part of\u00a0his itinerary!<\/p>\n<p><em>Half-Life 2<\/em> isn&#8217;t all that different than the first one in terms of gameplay.\u00a0\u00a0You still start with next to nothing in your inventory, solve physics-based puzzles to proceed, working your way through one big, interconnected\u00a0area that brings you to all corners of the game world.<\/p>\n<p>City 17 seems\u00a0to have been\u00a0inspired by post-Chernobyl\u00a0Pripyat, except not nearly as abandoned.\u00a0 In fact, I&#8217;d even go so far as to say that the area surrounding the Citadel is one of the most alive and life-like\u00a0environments we&#8217;ve ever seen in gaming.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t talk about graphics much on this blog, because they&#8217;ve never really been all that important to me.\u00a0 Still, the graphics in this game blew my mind.\u00a0 The lighting is just right, and it\u00a0manages\u00a0to complement the characters&#8217; fear and anxiety\u00a0quite nicely.\u00a0 Whether\u00a0I was\u00a0fending off hordes of Combine forces in broad daylight or taking a hovercraft ride\u00a0at sunset, I was always awestruck at how good the game looked.\u00a0 Even on the original Xbox, which was my first experience with the game, it looked amazing.<\/p>\n<p>The game has some pretty epic gunfights, but the true beauty of <em>Half-Life 2<\/em> lies in the puzzles it throws at you.\u00a0 Though you can use the Gravity Gun to pick up almost anything\u00a0to use\u00a0as a weapon, it also helps\u00a0you through some\u00a0of the predicaments Gordon finds himself in.\u00a0 Near the end of the game, it becomes even more powerful, and you can really wreak some havoc within the walls of the Citadel.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t sit here and\u00a0describe everything that makes <em>Half-Life 2<\/em> and its two episodic sequels so great.\u00a0 All I can do is encourage anyone and everyone to go out and play it.\u00a0\u00a0<em>The Orange Box<\/em> has all three <em>Half-Life 2<\/em> games, along with <em>Portal<\/em> and <em>Team Fortress 2 <\/em>on one disc!\u00a0 Do it up!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v6MhpZWlxe4\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>No stories about vomiting\u00a0this time around&#8230;\u00a0 sorry.<\/p>\n<p>I\u00a0technically\u00a0got this game for PC\u00a0in April of &#8217;04, a full seven months before it was even released.\u00a0 Unfortunately, I had no way of playing it!\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t until its release for Xbox in November of &#8217;05 that I finally got to play <em>Half-Life 2<\/em> for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>In early 2004, I went looking for a high-end video card before I even owned a PC\u00a0to install it in.\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t have much expertise in looking around online for that sort of thing, but my friend Tyler directed me\u00a0to a site called NCIX.com, which had an insane amount of video cards to choose from.\u00a0 Naturally, I chose the beefiest-looking one of the bunch, the 256MB ATI Radeon 9800XT.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it was also the most expensive one on the entire site, so I had to own it.\u00a0 $700 later, it was on its way!<\/p>\n<p>I eventually\u00a0bought\u00a0a PC to put it in, and since I didn&#8217;t really know how to get the video card all hooked up, I got one of my sister&#8217;s more computer savvy friends to do it.\u00a0 I might have been able to figure it out, but I figured I&#8217;d leave it up to someone who knew what they were doing.<\/p>\n<p>Greg&#8230;\u00a0 or was it Craig?\u00a0 It was one of those situations where, no matter how many times\u00a0we asked the guy&#8217;s name, we\u00a0just could not remember it.\u00a0 To this day, we&#8217;re still not sure\u00a0what\u00a0his name is.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, Greg\\Craig hooked up my video card, and he was evidently\u00a0jealous at the awesomeness of it.\u00a0 He kept talking games with me, and had taken the liberty of installing <em>Soldier of Fortune II<\/em>\u00a0and the first <em>Call of Duty<\/em> game.\u00a0 They were cool, I guess, but I really\u00a0bought the PC\u00a0to play some racing games, as well as <em>Medal of Honor: Allied Assault<\/em>.\u00a0 The other two, I&#8217;d probably be deleting pretty soon!<\/p>\n<p>Greg\\Craig also mentioned that the video card came with a voucher\u00a0to download <em>Half-Life 2<\/em> on\u00a0Valve&#8217;s brand new\u00a0gaming service called <em>Steam.<\/em>\u00a0 Whoa.\u00a0 That was an amazing idea, but&#8230;\u00a0 damn.\u00a0 I only had a 56k modem to work with at home, and there was no way a 2GB download would work on a connection that slow.\u00a0 I\u00a0would still be\u00a0able to enjoy games the only way I ever knew how, which was\u00a0to buy it and install it with the software provided in the box.\u00a0 Anything I&#8217;d ever really want to play would probably eventually be released for consoles anyway.<\/p>\n<p>I was fine with that, because streaming games online\u00a0was a bad idea.\u00a0 It&#8217;d never work!<\/p>\n<p>Silly\u00a0Greg\\Craig&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2497\" style=\"width: 522px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/radeon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2497\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2497\" alt=\"Expensive, but it lasted quite a while.
