Konami (Famicom Disk System, Famicom, Virtual Console)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Of all the people\u00a0that\u00a0read this blog on a regular basis, only one of\u00a0them truly knows what the hell this game is doing on my countdown.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow, the smallest and most out-of-the-way corner stores always had the\u00a0widest\u00a0variety of games available for rent.\u00a0 There were big video store chains in Fredericton, like Major Video and Blockbuster Video,\u00a0as well as\u00a0grocery and convenience stores\u00a0that\u00a0carried a decent collection.\u00a0 However, it was the tucked-away Video King downtown that had some of the rarer games available,\u00a0as\u00a0did\u00a0the little Scholten&#8217;s Esso&#8230;\u00a0 or Ultramar&#8230;\u00a0 or Shell&#8230;\u00a0 or Petro-Canada&#8230;\u00a0 depending on the year, it was always different.<\/p>\n<p>Rural New Brunswick\u00a0seemed to be\u00a0the best spot to find video game oddities.\u00a0 In Baie-Sainte-Anne, which today boasts a population of about 1,600 people (but was much less than that 20 years ago), there was always a handful of places to choose from if I wanted to rent a game.\u00a0 But there was one store,\u00a0tucked away in the back woods\u00a0on\u00a0a narrow chipsealed road, that I preferred more than any other.<\/p>\n<p>Le Day-and-Night Vari\u00e9t\u00e9!\u00a0 I loved the name of it!<\/p>\n<p>Forget going to Blockbuster and having\u00a0someone beat you to the game you wanted.\u00a0 Nope.\u00a0 Not here.\u00a0 The Baie area was so small that chances were pretty good you&#8217;d be walking out of the Vari\u00e9t\u00e9 with a great game!\u00a0 They\u00a0also had much rarer games, including ones from Japan.\u00a0 They weren&#8217;t always fun, but they often\u00a0looked\u00a0strange judging from the cover, and were always worth a shot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VuoU9M-2lP4\" height=\"360\" width=\"480\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve spoken to other gamers who grew up in\u00a0smaller towns and outskirts, and they too had played some rare games when they were younger.\u00a0 <em>31-in-1<\/em> was a compilation cart that was fairly common around the Maritimes (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=unXrzt9OHrM\">apparently<\/a>), as were <em>52-in-1<\/em> and <em>101-in-1.\u00a0 <\/em>There was one that I kept going back to, though, but not just because I was getting the most games for my mom&#8217;s buck.<\/p>\n<p>It was because <em>Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa<\/em> was an incredibly fun game\u00a0that\u00a0kept me occupied for the duration of our trips.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Bio Miracle<\/em> name, I actually didn&#8217;t know about until about seven or eight years ago.\u00a0 Vari\u00e9t\u00e9&#8217;s staff had apparently had enough of people not knowing enough about the game to rent it, so they\u00a0wrote &#8220;MARIO BABY&#8221; with a big black marker on the side of it.\u00a0 Until my friend Jordan mentioned a game he rented once that also had &#8220;MARIO BABY&#8221; written on it, I had no clue that it went by an entirely different name!<\/p>\n<p>The game itself is one part\u00a0<em>Super Mario Bros<\/em>., one part <em>Bubble Bobble<\/em>, and one part <em>Kickle Cubicle<\/em>.\u00a0 Upa, the main character, uses his magic rattle to\u00a0kill enemies in a particularly gruesome fashion; when struck with this seemingly\u00a0harmless toy, foes expand\u00a0like balloons and start floating away.\u00a0 You can then jump on them and use them as an elevator\u00a0to higher platforms,\u00a0or\u00a0use them offensively\u00a0by nudging them into\u00a0the opposite direction.\u00a0\u00a0When you do that, they&#8217;re\u00a0sent flying out of harm&#8217;s way,\u00a0possibly taking a few other enemies with them.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds like a painful way to go!<\/p>\n<p>The music, the controls, the variety&#8230;\u00a0 it was all so much fun!\u00a0 It was released for the Wii&#8217;s Virtual Console in 2008, so I was finally able to own &#8220;MARIO BABY&#8221;
