it was the caption under a screen shot of <em>Super Mario Bros. 3<\/em>, of Mario on a cloudy level (probably World 5), ready to make a jump onto one of those damn red, rotatey platforms&#8230;\u00a0 I can even remember which part of the trip it was, too; driving past the jail in Renous.\u00a0 Strange, how my memory works.<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, in mid-to-late 1990 there was an issue of<em> EGM\u00a0<\/em>with some Bonk game on the cover.\u00a0\u00a0That\u00a0didn&#8217;t warrant too much attention, other than the fact that the 16-bit graphics for it\u00a0looked phenomenal.\u00a0 It was just another game for another console I&#8217;d never own, anyway (the TurboGraphx-16).\u00a0 Among the other features in the issue&#8230;\u00a0 <em>wait&#8230;\u00a0 is that&#8230; no way&#8230;\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<div id=\"attachment_168\" style=\"width: 514px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/egmissuewbonk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-168\" class=\"size-full wp-image-168 \" title=\"egmissuewbonk\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/egmissuewbonk.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"504\" height=\"672\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/egmissuewbonk.jpg 720w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/egmissuewbonk-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 504px) 100vw, 504px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There was no way I was walking out of the store without this.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><em>Super Mario\u00a04<\/em>&#8230;.\u00a0 huh&#8230;\u00a0 I could hardly contain myself.\u00a0 As I got to the game&#8217;s preview, I was greeted by a map of &#8220;Dino Land&#8221;.\u00a0 The graphics seemed so colorful and detailed!\u00a0 And just who was this character named &#8220;Dino&#8221; Mario was riding??<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<div id=\"attachment_173\" style=\"width: 682px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/whoisdino.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-173\" class=\"size-full wp-image-173 \" title=\"whoisdino\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/whoisdino.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"504\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/whoisdino.jpg 960w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/whoisdino-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">I was equally mesmerized by the cape! It certainly made more sense than a Raccoon Tail...<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">There were four pages of previews, and I had those four pages to stare at\u00a0and salivate about for another year.\u00a0 This would be brutal.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">As time went on, more previews would surface.\u00a0\u00a0I eventually realized that <em>Super Mario Bros. 4<\/em> was in fact\u00a0<em>Super Mario World&#8230;<\/em>\u00a0 &#8220;Dino&#8221; would become known as Yoshi, and\u00a0many <em>Nintendo Power<\/em> issues would hype the game and new console, month after month&#8230;\u00a0 then, this came in the mail.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_154\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 404px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/np_mariomania.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154\" title=\"np_mariomania\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/np_mariomania.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"394\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/np_mariomania.jpg 394w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/np_mariomania-236x300.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 394px) 100vw, 394px\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Perfect for Mario fanatics like me!<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Not only did this fantastic <em>NP <\/em>exclusive include tidbits about every single Mario game in existence (not to mention the ones in which he had a cameo), <em>Mario Mania<\/em> included thorough level maps and tips for every single stage of a game that wasn&#8217;t even\u00a0out for another month or two&#8230;\u00a0 <em>Super Mario World<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">This did nothing but render me obsessed with the magazine until I would get my hands on the game&#8230;\u00a0 that came during the first week of Grade 3.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">My mom was awfully trusting to let me get my hands on such a time-waster so early on in the school year, but there I was on\u00a0a lunch break, calling her up to see if she had managed to get her hands on a console.\u00a0 Like the Wii, the Super NES was in short supply for a while, which is why we only managed to get it about a month after it came out.\u00a0 I\u00a0called home from the library\u00a0at school, and she confirmed that, indeed, she had purchased almighty Super NES, which came packed with <em>Super Mario World<\/em>.\u00a0 She had also rented a game called <em>Joe and Mac<\/em>, which was fun.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">Waiting for that school day to end was sheer torture, but I babbled about it with friends&#8230;\u00a0 I was the frickin&#8217;<em> man <\/em>for a while.\u00a0 Everyone wanted to talk to me about it, which was weird, because I was far from a popular kid.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">I finally got home, played the game, and was instantly (obviously) hooked.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">And what a perfect console it was&#8230;<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1y1iHucmqgM\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"345\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Like I said, I chose <em>Super Mario Advance 2<\/em> simply due to the amount of content.\u00a0 Like the other <em>Mario<\/em> games, I had to do a bit of embellishing&#8230;\u00a0 aside from the intro and castle-destroying sequences (which I always loved watching as a kid), there&#8217;s not a whole lot to show.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, those castles looked a heck of a lot smaller from the outside&#8230;\u00a0 wasn&#8217;t I just crossing\u00a0a\u00a0lava-filled chasm and spiked battering rams for 10 minutes?\u00a0 Here I am, I could have just jumped *over* the castle, but I had to go in it&#8230;\u00a0 dammit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even though the focus of this post is&#8230; \u00a0&#8230;the movie I made (posted below) used&#8230; I found it had a bit more storytelling material, such as a lengthened introduction.
