{"id":1498,"date":"2012-10-25T11:24:36","date_gmt":"2012-10-25T11:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=1498"},"modified":"2012-10-25T11:41:00","modified_gmt":"2012-10-25T11:41:00","slug":"my-top-100-61-felix-the-cat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=1498","title":{"rendered":"My Top 100: #61 &#8211; Felix the Cat"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1505\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/felix_the_cat_cover_front.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1505\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1505\" title=\"felix_the_cat_cover_front\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/felix_the_cat_cover_front.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/felix_the_cat_cover_front.jpg 400w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/felix_the_cat_cover_front-218x300.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1992 &#8211; Hudson Soft (NES)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>From one Hudson Soft game to another&#8230;\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t do that on purpose, but they were definitely one of the great game developers back in the day, so long as you&#8217;re willing to forget <em>Milon&#8217;s Secret Castle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t know much about <em>Felix the Cat <\/em>before this game came out.\u00a0 From looking at\u00a0him in\u00a0previews in <em>Nintendo Power<\/em>, I\u00a0recognized him from\u00a0really old black and white cartoons I&#8217;d see from time to time.\u00a0 There was really no other reason to rent the game that first time, other than my mom saying she also recognized him from when she was younger.<\/p>\n<p>We brought it home, and I was pretty damn impressed with what I played.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rVyno-t8w7E\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This is your typical platformer from those days.\u00a0 Some\u00a0might be tempted to call it a <em>Mario<\/em>-clone, what with the collecting of &#8220;Felix coins&#8221; and power ups.\u00a0 Felix even reaches special areas by jumping into giant coin purses (giggity), remeniscent of Mario jumping into pipes to reach loads of coins.\u00a0 Beyond that, however, <em>Felix the Cat<\/em> has a few nice changes to the formula.<\/p>\n<p>As you gain new abilities and your powers increase, you have to stay vigilant and collect all the coins you can.\u00a0 As time progresses with a certain ability, a heart meter in the top-left corner will slowly decrease.\u00a0 Let it go empty, and you&#8217;ll get knocked down a peg on the power up ladder &#8211; a power-down, essentially.\u00a0 Collect coins, get the Milk bottles that come every 10 coins, repeat.\u00a0 Coins get a bit more sparse in later levels, so it makes you up your game a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Seems like a bit of an ode to the <em>Adventure Island<\/em> hunger meter, to me!<\/p>\n<p>There were also a few flying and underwater stages that came along, helping to\u00a0break up the platforming monotony a bit.\u00a0 They had different upgrades as well,\u00a0and that was fun.<\/p>\n<p>So yeah, if you ever get a chance to play this game, please do so.\u00a0 Even though it isn&#8217;t the most challenging game in the world, you&#8217;ll be pleasantly surprised with how fun it is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1506\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/exactly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1506\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1506\" title=\"exactly\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/exactly.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/exactly.jpg 625w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/exactly-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1506\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A-ha. I get it.
