{"id":1306,"date":"2012-10-11T11:34:13","date_gmt":"2012-10-11T11:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=1306"},"modified":"2012-10-11T11:34:13","modified_gmt":"2012-10-11T11:34:13","slug":"my-top-100-70-kyle-pettys-no-fear-racing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/?p=1306","title":{"rendered":"My Top 100: #70 &#8211; Kyle Petty&#8217;s No Fear Racing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_1310\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/KylePettysNoFearRacingTitleScreen.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1310\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1310\" title=\"KylePetty'sNoFearRacingTitleScreen\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/KylePettysNoFearRacingTitleScreen.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"475\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/KylePettysNoFearRacingTitleScreen.jpg 475w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/KylePettysNoFearRacingTitleScreen-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 475px) 100vw, 475px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1995 &#8211; Williams Entertainment (Super NES)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not, I wasn&#8217;t always a NASCAR fan.\u00a0 My sister had been to a race at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania in &#8217;95, and it\u00a0piqued my curiosity.\u00a0 I watched a few races here and there, but it wasn&#8217;t until\u00a0a year\u00a0later\u00a0when I attended my very own first race that I was truly hooked.<\/p>\n<p>Until then, my knowledge of the sport was pretty limited.\u00a0 I had heard the names Davey Allison and Alan Kulwicki before, two of the sport&#8217;s biggest stars (Kulwicki being the champion in &#8217;92) that were killed in separate aviation accidents a couple years earlier.\u00a0 I also knew that NASCAR race cars were full-bodied, unlike the &#8220;canoe with wheels&#8221; approach by Indy Cars and Formula One.\u00a0 That was about the extent of it, however.<\/p>\n<p><em>Kyle Petty&#8217;s No Fear Racing <\/em>was my\u00a0introduction to the sport, and it pretty much\u00a0couldn&#8217;t have been further from the real thing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vcCp3eEYZHc\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This game didn&#8217;t have\u00a0NASCAR&#8217;s license to go ahead and use real track layouts, or even real driver names to race as or against.\u00a0 You could choose to race\u00a0with a batch of familiar styled numbers, from Rusty Wallace&#8217;s #2 to Richard Petty&#8217;s famous #43.\u00a0 Beyond that, it had nothing to do with the sport I&#8217;ve come to love so much.<\/p>\n<p>The gameplay itself is not unlike that of your typical arcade racer;\u00a0you could\u00a0pick up on-track items (<em>Mario Kart<\/em>-style) like nitro-boosters for a quick burst of speed, or\u00a0stacks of tires for better grip.\u00a0 There were also mufflers or cans of oil that, if touched, could hinder your progress instead of help you out.<\/p>\n<p>Tracks\u00a0pretty much all looked\u00a0identical from behind the wheel, except for their layouts.\u00a0 Contrary to real-life stock car racing, races could be run in the rain or snow, changing the handling characteristics considerably.\u00a0 You also had to take pit strategy into consideration, since running out of gas was a real (and really embarrassing) possibility.<\/p>\n<p>As with other games on my list, this game was not technically special, or ground-breaking\u00a0in any other\u00a0way.\u00a0 Still, it was my first experience in playing a\u00a0racing game based on a real sport, and it has gotten quite a few hours of gameplay since then.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1321\" style=\"width: 856px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/nascar.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1321\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1321\" title=\"nascar\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/nascar.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"846\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/nascar.jpg 846w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/nascar-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 846px) 100vw, 846px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1321\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This would never happen in the game, but it happened last Sunday in real life.
