SNK (Arcade, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, NES, PlayStation Network)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ports of old arcade games are still released from time to time, either as part of a compilation disc or as downloadable titles.\u00a0 I often jump at the chance to buy them, since I get to experience all those titles I never had the chance to because of a lack of quarters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Continue?&#8221;\u00a0 Heck yeah, I&#8217;ll continue!\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t cost a dime!<\/p>\n<p>Playing through arcade games like this is still a relatively new concept, but the NES port of <em>Guerrilla War <\/em>was among the first to let you continue on through to the end of the game, regardless of how many times you had to die doing it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fTs-6dgGxqs\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The game is a shooter set on an unnamed\u00a0central American island, where the ruler\u00a0of\u00a0of an oppressive regime is\u00a0leading with\u00a0an iron fist.\u00a0 As a fighter in the resistance, your character charges onto the island with guns blazing, slowly making his way\u00a0inland through hordes of enemy fighters towards the enemy stronghold.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like <em>Contra <\/em>in top-down format, what with the crazy action, weapon upgrades and jungle-setting.<\/p>\n<p>If the plot of the game sounds familiar, then it&#8217;s probably because of the obvious references to the situation in\u00a0Cuba\u00a0in the\u00a0late 1950&#8217;s.\u00a0 There&#8217;s no direct\u00a0mention of the Batista regime, nor is there any reference to Che Guevara or Fidel Castro by name.\u00a0\u00a0This is due to a localization of the game&#8217;s instruction\u00a0manual and in-game dialogue over fears that anti-Communist sentiment in the West would hurt\u00a0SNK&#8217;s reputation.\u00a0\u00a0Nevertheless,\u00a0it was actually released under the name <em>Guevara <\/em>in Japan for a\u00a0short period, making it one of the more rare\u00a0and sought after Famicom titles.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s simple and mindless shooting fun, and I wish like hell that\u00a0I had bought it that day at Mike&#8217;s yard sale&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1237\" style=\"width: 532px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/guerwar1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1237\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1237\" title=\"guerwar1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/guerwar1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"522\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/guerwar1.jpg 522w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/guerwar1-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 522px) 100vw, 522px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Hey look, it&#8217;s Mario!&#8221;
