Honda pretty well before I ever heard mention of Scorpion or Sub-Zero.\u00a0 When I&#8217;d rent the Super NES version, I didn&#8217;t really have a favourite fighter, and I\u00a0tried to use a variety of them as I climbed up the game&#8217;s competitive ladder.\u00a0 Once you beat the cast of regulars, four more\u00a0tough competitors were up next.<\/p>\n<p>If you buy a fighting game these days, and the &#8220;boss&#8221; characters are playable from the get-go, you don&#8217;t really think twice about it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s almost\u00a0expected!\u00a0\u00a0<em>Street Fighter II<\/em> had\u00a0four bosses\u00a0&#8211; Balrog, Vega, Sagat and M. Bison &#8211; all with unique attributes that made them challenging in their own right, and you couldn&#8217;t play\u00a0AS\u00a0any of them.\u00a0 Not even with cheats!\u00a0 How badass must they be, if Capcom doesn&#8217;t even think we&#8217;d be able to handle them?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d_e9eOVct6w\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>*TOTALLY RAD, MAN.\u00a0 Also, I thought\u00a0Ryu&#8217;s name\u00a0was either pronounced\u00a0&#8220;Ruy-you&#8221; or &#8220;Ree-you&#8221;, not &#8220;Roo&#8221;?*<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward about a year, and <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em>&#8216;s about to hit shelves.\u00a0 Of course, Capcom didn&#8217;t want their massive money-maker to take a hit in sales, so they released both\u00a0<em>Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition <\/em>for Sega Genesis and <em>Street Fighter II Turbo <\/em>for Super NES.\u00a0 Essentially the same game, they were the first\u00a0in the long line of Super-Mega-Hyper-Turbo-Special-EX-Champion-HD\u00a0titles that <em>SFII <\/em>would become infamous for.<\/p>\n<p>These re-releases came with a few additions, like bonus challenges and alternate costumes&#8230;\u00a0\u00a0There was only one thing I cared about, though; finally, I could play as\u00a0any of the four bosses and RULE THE WORLD!!\u00a0 I thought it was somewhat taboo to play as the bad guys, and that&#8217;s what felt so awesome about playing this game.\u00a0 After all, it&#8217;s not like you can choose to be Bowser or Dr. Wily at any given time!<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I never owned <em>Turbo<\/em>, and I also never got to own <em>Mortal Kombat <\/em>until much later.\u00a0 Still, while at our local Co-Op (grocery store) shortly before Christmas in &#8217;93, my mom and I ran into my friend Josh&#8217;s dad.\u00a0 In his shopping cart were a bunch of gifts, and both of those games were in there!\u00a0 I was jealous as all get out, but I was tasked with keeping it a secret.\u00a0 I&#8217;d do my best!<\/p>\n<p>Not long afterwards, a friend of ours had his birthday party.\u00a0 There were only about ten days to go before Christmas, so naturally, I asked\u00a0Josh what he had asked for.\u00a0 He said he&#8217;d done some snooping, and though he didn&#8217;t quite get a good look at the game box, he thought it was <em>Darius Twin<\/em>.\u00a0 I said &#8220;oh cool!&#8221;, but inwardly laughed at him.\u00a0 If only he knew!<\/p>\n<p>Well, he did get <em>Darius Twin<\/em> that Christmas, as well as <em>Contra III: The Alien Wars<\/em>.\u00a0 With <em>MK <\/em>and <em>SFII Turbo <\/em>on top of them, we wasted so much time playing them into the wee hours of the morning, it&#8217;s just ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1109\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/1250572848660_display.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1109\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1109\" title=\"1250572848660_display\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/1250572848660_display.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/1250572848660_display.jpg 640w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/1250572848660_display-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oops.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
