1991 – Tengen (NES, Genesis)<\/p><\/div>\n

When I was younger, I didn’t really know why some NES cartridges looked different than usual.\u00a0 I managed to rent some Camerica (gold) and Color\u00a0Dreams\u00a0(light blue) games a few times in Baie Sainte-Anne, which seemed like a great spot to find\u00a0strange titles.\u00a0 Tengen was another company whose cartridges were different, opting for black and a slightly different shape with two little grips on it…\u00a0 they looked pretty snazzy, and I never really considered them out of the ordinary.<\/p>\n

As it turns out, Nintendo had some pretty strict control over what content NES games could have.\u00a0 This is common knowledge to video game addicts now, but when I finally\u00a0learned this, it all made sense.\u00a0 Good ol’ quality control!!!\u00a0 You know, LJN games notwithstanding.<\/p>\n

Atari was actually releasing games under the\u00a0Tengen name, throwing its name into the ring of companies who had to bypass the 10NES<\/a> lock-out chip.\u00a0 As far as I can recall, however, the quality of the majority of these games was pretty good!<\/p>\n
