Tengen (NES, Genesis)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When I was younger, I didn&#8217;t really know why some NES cartridges looked different than usual.\u00a0 I managed to rent some Camerica (gold) and Color\u00a0Dreams\u00a0(light blue) games a few times in Baie Sainte-Anne, which seemed like a great spot to find\u00a0strange titles.\u00a0 Tengen was another company whose cartridges were different, opting for black and a slightly different shape with two little grips on it&#8230;\u00a0 they looked pretty snazzy, and I never really considered them out of the ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out, Nintendo had some pretty strict control over what content NES games could have.\u00a0 This is common knowledge to video game addicts now, but when I finally\u00a0learned this, it all made sense.\u00a0 Good ol&#8217; quality control!!!\u00a0 You know, LJN games notwithstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Atari was actually releasing games under the\u00a0Tengen name, throwing its name into the ring of companies who had to bypass the <a title=\"10NES\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/10NES\">10NES<\/a> lock-out chip.\u00a0 As far as I can recall, however, the quality of the majority of these games was pretty good!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/atuzr734LWo\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>*Oh man, memories&#8230;*<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>RBI Baseball 3<\/em> is the only Tengen game I ever owned, and I played it a TON.\u00a0 I had never played a sports game before it that was licensed by a major league player&#8217;s association, which meant that I got to play as the real guys!\u00a0 Kelly Gruber, Mark McGwire, Ken Griffey Jr., Jose Canseco&#8230;\u00a0 they were all there!\u00a0 It was incredible!<\/p>\n<p>I watched baseball religiously when I was little, about as religiously as I watch NASCAR these days.\u00a0 In my mind, if I could play as the Toronto Blue Jays and win in the game\u00a0against whatever team they were going up against that night, then the real Jays could\u00a0pull it off, too.\u00a0 Of course, it was all superstition, and the Blue Jays were a pretty stacked team for a while.\u00a0 It was almost expected of them to win on a nightly basis!\u00a0 Well, expected from me, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>I like to take a little bit of credit for their two World Series titles.\u00a0 They did have to go through the Oakland A&#8217;s in &#8217;92, and with the McGwire\\Canseco duo hitting home runs like crazy\u00a0in <em>RBI3<\/em>, I had to work pretty hard to beat them&#8230;\u00a0 but I always did.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1011\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/a3849c414fd590cd7e0bcc1db24a.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1011\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1011\" title=\"a3849c414fd590cd7e0bcc1db24a\" src=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/a3849c414fd590cd7e0bcc1db24a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/a3849c414fd590cd7e0bcc1db24a.jpg 900w, http:\/\/www.controlpadblues.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/a3849c414fd590cd7e0bcc1db24a-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">You&#8217;re welcome!<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
